Voices of the People: 2024 SDG4 Civil Society Spotlight Reports on the VNR
ASPBAE’s Research and Advocacy Officer, Lae Santiago, was among the speakers in the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) Virtual Side Event on the “𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲: 𝗖𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗡𝗥” on 17 July 2024.
She shared the highlights of the Civil Society Spotlight Reports on #SDG4 jointly developed by ASPBAE and its national education coalition members in 12 countries across the region including:
- The need to transform education to advance social and ecological justice and contribute to solutions to the climate crisis, and earmark budgets for enhancing #climatechangeeducation and awareness;
- The need to strengthen legislation, policy, and financing measures to make education systems truly equitable and inclusive and;
- The need to leverage existing data, previous Voluntary National Review (VNR) reports, and Civil Society Spotlight Reports to reflect on experiences, challenges, lessons learned, and identify gaps and ways forward.
Representatives of the ANCEFA-Africa Network Campaign on Education For All, CLADE – Campaña Latinoamericana por el Derecho a la Educación, Arab Campaign for Education for All الحملة العربية للتعليم للجميع- آكيا (ACEA), and the European and North American Campaign for Education (ENACE) also highlighted the advances made towards SDG 4 and the persisting issues of inequity and exclusion in their contexts stemming from the findings of the Spotlight Reports.
This side event aimed to engage participants in a dialogue about the realisation of the right to education, focusing specifically on the fulfilment of state obligations to SDG 4.
