Postponement of CONFINTEA VI |
|
The Sixth International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA 6) has been postponed on account of the Influenza A (H1N1) or the swine flu pandemic. The official communication of UNESCO and the Minister of Education, Brazil is here .
UNESCO and the Brazil government representatives are meeting this week in Brazil to enable a decision on the new dates and venue. The actual site within Brazil is also to be finalized – whether it remains in Belem or moves to another city is to be determined soon. ASPBAE & ICAE are pressing for the dates to stay within 2009.
The logistical and financial impact of moving the event to another date, 2 weeks before it is supposed to happen, has not been minimal.
The upside is CSOs have more time to plan. GRALE and the Outcomes document can be developed into more robust pieces with a longer time frame for preparations. CSOs can sharpen thinking on the 'must-haves' a bit more, including the mechanisms, time frames, structures for follow-up/follow through, and the financing targets and modalities. There is time to sharpen in the area of collective CSO demands on concrete deliverables from CONFINTEA 6. There will also have the International Literacy Day in September to marshal our forces around adult education.
The DVV-led Bonn Conference on Financing Adult Education for Development (June 23-24) will be a space to re-group and plan on these. This event will happen as scheduled - with the programme transformed from a CONFINTEA 6 'follow-up' to a preparatory event. The ICAE CONFINTEA 6 Organising group known as the Leicester Commission will convene within the Bonn Conference for this purpose.
ASPBAE will keep all its members updated on developments on this front. |

From BIG READ to CONFINTEA 6: Seizing the Moment for Youth and Adult Learning

This year’s Global Action Week holds special significance for us, as it focused on the crucial but neglected issue of youth and adult education and learning. Over the last few years, the mobilization during this week has increased exponentially, so this has been a very important occasion to demonstrate support for this huge concern in a united manner all over the world.
As a part of this unifying and unified event, education coalitions around the world organized 'Big Read' and other innovative events to celebrate the power of lifelong learning. In the Asia Pacific, ASPBAE members and education campaign coalition partners participated through several events: |
